Rare Birds in The Netherlands in 2011

This is the 32nd annual report on rare birds in the Netherlands to be published in Dutch Birding. It comprises records from 2011 as well as belated and reconsidered records, dating back to 1844, which have been evaluated by the Dutch rarities committee, the Commissie Dwaalgasten Nederlandse Avifauna (CDNA). Several 2011 reports are still under review or awaiting submission and could therefore not be included. In addition, some reports for 2010 and earlier years are still under consideration for various reasons. The increase in entering records online on internet portals like www.waarneming.nl produces many new details of past records. In this report, therefore, date extensions are presented, for the sake of completeness.

Details included for each record are, if available: date(s); location and/or municipality (municipal divisions as on 1 January 2011); province; number of birds if more than one, plumage and sex; type of record if trapped, photographed, sound-recorded, videoed or found dead (and where specimen is stored if known); names of up to three observers involved in finding, identifying and recording, and relevant references in the literature, which normally include (inter)national but not regional journals, and published photographs. Records from 2010 lasting into 2011 that already have been published in the 2010 report (Ovaa et al 2011) are repeated here without reference, for the sake of completeness. Observations not (yet) submitted but mentioned in the 2010 report are not repeated in this report. The sequence of the records in the species accounts is from the current year backwards, with records within one year presented chronologically. A compilation of most rarities videoed can be found in Plomp (2012). Numbers after each (sub)species' name refer to the total number of individuals 1 from 1 January 1800 to 31 December 1979, 2 since 1 January 1980 but excluding 3 the current year. Taxa marked with an asterisk * are new to the Dutch list.

The following CDNA members voted on some or all of the records in this report: Rob S A van Bemmelen, Nils van Duivendijk, Dick Groenendijk (chairman), Frank Neijts, Arjan Ovaa, Willem van Rijswijk (secretary), Roy Slaterus, Laurens B Steijn, Arend Wassink and Rik Winters. Max Berlijn and Marcel Haas supported the committee as non-voting archivists and assisted in submitting many reports published on national and regional websites. Reports can be submitted by e-mail (cdna@dutchbirding.nl) via the CDNA page on www.dutchbirding.nl, using an electronic submission form. Furthermore, submitting a record is also facilitated by filling in this form after entering a record on www.waarneming.nl. Reports can also be sent by ordinary mail to CDNA, Duinlustparkweg 98A, 2082 EG Santpoort-Zuid, the Netherlands, preferably using standard forms, which can be obtained free of charge from CDNA. On the Dutch Birding website, information is shown of either recently accepted records or rejected reports as well as records and reports currently under review. An online database with all records of rare birds up to 2011 is now accessible on www.dutchavifauna.nl (cf Dutch Birding 34: 346, 2012).

Decisions regarding taxonomy have been delegated to the Dutch committee for avian systematics (Commissie Systematiek Nederlandse Avifauna; CSNA), which on 1 January 2011 consisted of the following members: Arnoud B van den Berg, André J van Loon, C S (Kees) Roselaar and George Sangster (secretary).

In 2011, at least 365 species were recorded, which is above the average of 362 species a year for the last 10 years. The number may rise depending on the acceptance of several pending reports. Two species were new to the Dutch list in 2011: Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae and Long-tailed Shrike Lanius schach. An addition to the list from earlier years is the Hooded Merganser Lophodytes cucullatus from 27 November 2007 to 12 January 2008. With these three additions, the Dutch list now numbers 503 species. Other highlights for 2011 included the second Caspian Plover Charadrius asiaticus, Kumlien's Gull Larus glaucoides kumlieni, Eastern Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans albistriata and Rock Bunting Emberiza cia, third Spotted Sandpiper Actitis macularius and Cretzschmar's Bunting E caesia, fourth Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus, Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra and Black-faced Bunting E spodocephala, fifth Baird's Sandpiper Calidris bairdii, and sixth Red-necked Stint C ruficollis, Eurasian Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum and Cirl Bunting E cirlus. In addition, 2011 was a good year for Great Spotted Cuckoo Clamator glandarius with four records, Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius, Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites ruficollis and Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola with six, Dusky Warbler Phylloscopus fuscatus with nine, Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus with 12 (involving 15 individuals) and Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus with 28 (involving 29 individuals). From 1844 and 1888, the first Cream-colored Courser Cursorius cursor and second Slender-billed Curlew Numenius tenuirostris, respectively, were re-admitted to the Dutch list, based on new information about collection date and location.

Systematic list of records

Ross's Goose / Ross' Gans
Anser rossii 0,12,0

* Ross's x Barnacle Goose / Ross' Gans x Brandgans
Anser rossii x Branta leucopsis 0,1,0
2005 2 January, Anjum, Dongeradeel, Friesland, photographed (R van der Weijde).
The CDNA reviews all hybrid records in which one of the parent species is considered by the CDNA, in this case, Ross's Goose. This hybrid type is new for the Dutch list.

Greenland White-fronted Goose / Groenlandse Kolgans
Anser albifrons flavirostris 14,67,1
16 January, Barsbekerbinnenpolder, Zwartsluis, Zwartewaterland, Overijssel, second calendar-year, photographed (M Zekhuis, J-L van Eijk).

Hutchins's Cackling Goose / Hutchins' Canadese Gans
Branta hutchinsii hutchinsii 0,7,1
16 January, Roosteren, Echt-Susteren, Limburg, photographed (T Cuypers, M Berlijn, G Lamers et al; Dutch Birding 33: 148, plate 160, 2011).
Of the different subspecies of Cackling Goose B hutchinsii, only B h hutchinsii is on the Dutch list. This was only the eighth record and the first in an inland province.

Ring-necked Duck / Ringsnaveleend
Aythya collaris 5,29,0
27 February, Lepelaarplassen, Almere, Flevoland, adult male, photographed (H Onderwater; Dutch Birding 33: 145, plate 155, 2011); 12 April to 4 May, Philipsdam, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, adult male, photographed (P A Wolf, M Klootwijk, T O V Muusse et al).
Both individuals are considered returning birds, earlier seen on 4-10 April 2010 at Lepelaarplassen and from 25 April to 3 May 2010 at Philipsdam, respectively. Three individuals, at Weerribben, Overijssel (female), Lepelaarplassen (female) and Jisp, Noord-Holland (male), have not (yet) been submitted.

White-headed Duck / Witkopeend
Oxyura leucocephala 5,12,1
17 December to 24 February 2012, Reeuwijkse Plassen, Reeuwijk, Zuid-Holland, first-winter, photographed (B de Lange et al; Dutch Birding 34: 68, plate 89, 2012).

King Eider / Koningseider

Both records are considered to refer to the same bird.

Bufflehead / Buffelkopeend
Bucephala albeola 0,2,0
9 October 2010 to 14 May and 27 September to 26 May 2012, Gaatkensplas and surroundings, Barendrecht, Zuid-Holland, adult male, photographed (Dutch Birding 33: 148, plate 161, 2011).
The returning male stayed at Gaatkensplas and surroundings for its eighth consecutive winter.

* Hooded Merganser / Kokardezaagbek
Lophodytes cucullatus 0,2,0
2010 13 January to 15 February, Genemuiden, Zwartewaterland, Overijssel, adult female, photographed (H Pohlmann, M Bunskoek, K de Vries et al).
2008 See 2007 below.
2007 27 November to 12 January 2008, Broekbos, Biddinghuizen, Dronten, Flevoland, and 25 January to 10 February 2008, Ooievaars- and Reigersplas, Lelystad, Flevoland, first-winter male, photographed, videoed (T Schenk et al; Dutch Birding 30: 52, plate 70, 2008).
The species has an extensive breeding range throughout North America. Being migratory, its main winter range includes the south-eastern USA for eastern populations and the Pacific coast north of California, USA, for western populations. In the WP, there have been records of apparent vagrants in Azores, Britain, Canary Islands, Iceland and Ireland. Although the CDNA has the opinion that vagrants of this species may reach north-western Europe, it is also obvious that most if not all previous Dutch reports involved birds of captive origin. Therefore, observers are encouraged to document subsequent sightings extensively. Especially, it is necessary to establish that a bird does not wear a captivity ring and does not show other signs of captivity. It may become even more difficult to distinguish vagrants from escapes since there is a report of successful breeding in the wild in the Netherlands (van Dijk et al 2010).

Falcated Duck / Bronskopeend
Anas falcata 0,10,1
13 February, Twentekanaal, Lochem, Overijssel, adult male, photographed (M Schaap).
The unringed bird was beautifully photographed while standing on a dam. It was accompanied by several Gadwalls A strepera and Mallards A platyrhynchos.

American Wigeon / Amerikaanse Smient
Anas americana 5,56,1
18 October to 13 November, Zandvoortweg, Veere, Zeeland, adult male, photographed (A van Gilst et al).

Blue-winged Teal / Blauwvleugeltaling
Anas discors 6,30,1
2010 30 August, Dijkmanshuizen, Texel, Noord-Holland, adult male, eclipse plumage (A Ovaa).
The white line bordering the bluish wing panel mentioned in the description of this bird indicated that it was an eclipse-plumaged male and not a female.

Baikal Teal / Siberische Taling
Anas formosa 8,2,0
2010 29 January to 24 February and 14 March to 23 April, Gravenbos, Almelo, Overijssel, adult male, photographed (G Mensink, M Zekhuis et al; Dutch Birding 32: 180, plate 143, 2010).
The full-winged and unringed bird stayed in a canal in the eastern part of the country. The species is considered to be a possible vagrant in western Europe and, as the bird did not show signs of a stay in captivity, it was accepted as the 10th. Except for a recent record in May 2006, the others were from 1909-62. A male photographed at Wissenkerke, Zeeland, on 11 February (Dutch Birding 33: 148, plate 159, 2011) is still in circulation to establish its possible origin.

Green-winged Teal / Amerikaanse Wintertaling
Anas carolinensis 6,47,2
9-10 and 29 April, Egbert Schuldinkeiland, Lauwersmeer, Dongeradeel, Friesland, adult male, photographed (R Cazemier, H Scholten et al); 13-26 April, Prunjepolder, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, adult male, photographed (M van Waasdijk, C Beeke et al); 14-26 April, Polder Hardenhoek, Brabantse Biesbosch, Werkendam, Noord-Brabant, adult male, photographed (T O V Muusse et al); 15 April to 5 May, Harderbroek, Zeewolde, Flevoland, adult male, photographed (R Krieger et al); 5-12 May, Ezumakeeg, Dongeradeel, Friesland, adult male (R Cazemier, M van der Velde et al); 15-18 November, Dussen, Werkendam, Noord-Brabant, adult male, photographed (L Zwaal et al); 24-27 November, Dijkmanshuizen, Texel, Noord-Holland, adult male, photographed.
2010 2-14 May, Ezumakeeg, Dongeradeel, Friesland, adult male, photographed (M Bot et al)
2008 13 April and 30 April to 4 May, Oude Robbengat, Lauwersmeer, De Marne, Groningen, adult male, videoed (R Cazemier, W-J Fontijn, M Jonker et al).
The birds at Prunjepolder and Harderbroek are considered to be new arrivals; all other individuals are assumed to be returning birds.

European Storm Petrel / Stormvogeltje
Hydrobates pelagicus -,128 (in 1982-99),-
1989 18 July, between Terschelling and Doggersbank, Continentaal Plat (M Olthoff, L Stegeman).
Van den Berg & Bosman (1999, 2001) mention only one July record for 1900-81, on 2 July 1954 (found dead on the beach near Zoutelande, Zeeland), and two were accepted for July 1998 (at Camperduin, Noord-Holland). The species was considered in 1982-99 (when 128 individuals were accepted) and the CDNA still welcomes records from this period.

Atlantic Great Cormorant / Grote Aalscholver
Phalacrocorax carbo carbo 7,41,-
2008 5-6 January, Hoornse Meer, Groningen, Groningen, second-winter, photographed (R Winters et al); 16-30 January, Hoornse Meer, Groningen, Groningen, photographed (R Winters et al); 9 February and 8 March, Braakman, Terneuzen, Zeeland, second calendar-year, photographed, videoed (R S A van Bemmelen, R Bom); 15 (one) and 29 March (three), Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, adults, photographed, videoed (R S A van Bemmelen, D Groenendijk, S Rijnbeek); 25 August, De Volharding, Texel, Noord-Holland, second calendar-year female, found dead, photographed, specimen held at Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam (E Kompanje, A de Baerdemaker); 20-28 December, Eemshaven, Eemsmond, Groningen, first calendar-year, photographed (M Jonker, W Wind, J van der Zee et al).
2006 15 November, Huizen, Huizen, Noord-Holland, second calendar-year, photographed (R F J van Beusekom).
1990 19 November, Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, adult male, found dead, photographed, specimen held at Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam (N D van Swelm, A de Baerdemaker).
The two records in Groningen in 2008 are a correction of the previously published record of one individual at this site on 5-16 January 2008 (Ovaa et al 2011); apparently, two individuals were present (de Baerdemaker 2012). The identification of the bird found dead at Maasvlakte in 1990 (of which only a skeleton is available in the museum collection) was established by measurements of some bones, which excluded Continental Great Cormorant P c sinensis. Atlantic Great Cormorant is no longer considered since 1 January 2009 but the CDNA still welcomes records from before this date.

Squacco Heron / Ralreiger
Ardeola ralloides 25 (since 1866),54,3
11 May, Weerribben, Steenwijkerland, Overijssel, second calendar-year, photographed (K Vledder, A Vink); 25 May, Leikeven, Huis ter Heide, Tilburg, Noord-Brabant, adult summer, photographed (T van Heusden); 26 May to 1 June, De Driehoek, Texel, Noord-Holland, second calendar-year, photographed, videoed (A Wassink, J van den Berg, P Duin et al; Dutch Birding 33: 274, plate 348, 2011).

Griffon Vulture / Vale Gier
Gyps fulvus 9,181,19
21-22 May, Heinkenszand, Borsele, and Goes, Goes, Zeeland, 17, photographed (G van der Vliet, K De Rouck et al; Dutch Birding 33: 270, plate 339, 2011), and 22 May, Chaam, Alphen-Chaam, Noord-Brabant, 17, photographed (L van Oerle; Dutch Birding 33: 270, plate 338, 2011); 25 June, Polder Eijerwaard, Werkendam, Noord-Brabant, photographed (A Ouburg); 23 October, Geleen, Sittard-Geleen, Limburg, photographed (I Kremers).
2010 8 June, Guisveld, Zaanstad, Noord-Holland (G Tanis).
2007 23 August, Groote Heide, Venlo, Limburg, photographed (K Hubatsch, H Thier, H Klein et al).
Not all reports have (yet) been submitted, including from 2010 sightings on 8 June (Schoorl, Noord-Holland) and 12 June (Texel, Den Helder and Broekermeer, all in Noord-Holland). The CDNA welcomes all other reports to document wanderings of groups or individuals throughout the country. The Geleen record is the latest ever and only the second for October; the previous one concerned six birds of which three were shot during World War II by British military near Schijndel, Noord-Brabant, on 4 October 1944.

Short-toed Snake Eagle / Slangenarend
Circaetus gallicus 3,52,15
21 April, Brabantse Biesbosch, Drimmelen, Noord-Brabant, photographed (T van der Es, L Boon); 22 April, Strabrechtse Heide, Heeze-Leende, Noord-Brabant, at least fourth calendar-year, photographed (B Feijen); 23 April, Elspeetse Heide, Nunspeet, Gelderland, photographed (E Meijer, W Hermus); 23 April, Robbenjager, De Cocksdorp, Texel, Noord-Holland, and Vuurboetsduin, Vlieland, Friesland, at least fourth calendar-year, photographed (A Wassink, R F J van Beusekom, C Zuhorn); 5 May, Bennekomse Hooilanden, Ede, Gelderland, at least fourth calendar-year, photographed (A Bos, R Jousma, P G Gelderblom); 6 May, Oostvaardersplassen, Lelystad, Flevoland (J Brandjes, P Welling, P Piepers et al); 21 May to 29 July, Deelense Veld, NP De Hoge Veluwe, Ede, Gelderland, at least fourth calendar-year, photographed (D Groenendijk et al); 22 May, Basaltdijk, Roosendaal, Noord-Brabant, photographed (R van Viegen); 30 May to 3 June, Delleboersterheide, Ooststellingwerf, Friesland, subadult, photographed (R Cazemier, M Bot, R Halff et al; Dutch Birding 33: 279, plate 359, 2011); 4 June to 11 July, Wapserveld, Westerveld, Drenthe, photographed (J Denee et al); 16 July, Leusden, Utrecht, photographed (R Jousma); 9 July to 24 September, Fochteloërveen, Noordenveld, Drenthe, and Ooststellingwerf, Friesland, maximum of four (four on 5-12 and 27 August, three on 13-26 August, two from 31 July to 4 August and from 28 August to 15 September, and one on 9-31 July and 16-24 September), photographed (F Oling et al; Dutch Birding 33: 350, plate 452, 2011); 2 August, Kwintelooijen, Veenendaal, Utrecht, photographed (P G Gelderblom, A Vink).
2010 3 October, De Malpie, Valkenswaard, Noord-Brabant, photographed (H Kruseman); 9 October, Ouddorp, Goedereede, Zuid-Holland, adult, photographed (G Tanis, M Sluijter).
A maximum of four at Fochteloërveen in August is a good illustration of the fact that this species is becoming less rare and often turning up in the same areas (almost) year after year. A second individual reported at Elspeetse Heide on 23 April was not accepted because of an inadequate description. The bird recorded on 5 May at Bennekomse Hooilanden is considered the same individual that turned up later that month (from 21 May) at Deelense Veld. The species is no longer considered from 1 January 2012 but the CDNA still welcomes records from before this date.

Pallid Harrier / Steppekiekendief

The best year ever. The bird at Hertogin Hedwigepolder was often seen across the border in Belgium between 4 and 25 September. Since the species has become less rare in recent years, also elsewhere in western Europe, it is no longer considered from 1 January 2012 but the CDNA still welcomes records from before this date.

Booted Eagle / Dwergarend
Aquila pennata 0,17,1
30 April, Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, Zandvoort, Noord-Holland (N Graafsma, B Verweij, W Busse et al), and IJmuiden, Velsen, Noord-Holland (R Slaterus, M S Robb, F G S M Hieselaar), and Kopje van Bloemendaal, Bloemendaal, Noord-Holland (B Bosch, A Duijnhouwer).
This elusive individual was seen by scattered (groups of) birders in the large dune area between Zandvoort, Bloemendaal, Driehuis and IJmuiden. A report of presumably the same bird flying low over Santpoort-Zuid, Noord-Holland, on 1 May has only recently been submitted.

* Eleonora's Falcon / Eleonora's Valk
Falco eleonorae 0,0,1
17 September, Oostvaardersplassen, Lelystad, Flevoland, second calendar-year, dark morph, photographed (R van Baelen, G Rijmenans, L Cieters et al; Rijmenans & Ebels, 2011; Birding World 25: 31, 2011, Dutch Birding 33: 341, plate 437, 377, plate 490-491, 378, plate 492-495, 2011).
The bird was found by a group of c 50 birders from Belgium during a birdwatching trip. It was watched for about half an hour while it was hunting dragonflies and last seen flying away in a southerly direction. Although the area was extensively searched the next day, the bird was not relocated.

Gyrfalcon / Giervalk
Falco rusticolus 4,4,1
14 October, Katwijk aan Zee, Katwijk, Zuid-Holland, first-winter, grey morph, photographed (J Engberts, F Klootwijk, R Floor et al); 28 October to 18 March 2012, between Westdorpe, Terneuzen, and Maagd van Gent, Sluis, Zeeland, first-winter, grey morph, photographed, videoed (P L Meininger, P A Wolf, M Berlijn et al; Birding World 25: 11, 2012, Dutch Birding 34: 51, plate 54, 63, plate 77, 68, plate 88, 126, plate 174-175, 2012).
The bird flying past Katwijk aan Zee is considered to be the same individual as the one wintering in Zeeland because of similarities in plumage. On 23 October 2011, five days before it turned up in Zeeland, it had been found just across the border in Belgium (Dutch Birding 33: 397, plate 517-518, 2011). During the first weeks of its stay, it was very mobile and seen at sites many kilometres apart. Later, it settled itself in the polders between Philippine and Sluiskil, Zeeland, perching for hours on electricity pylons, and its presence was enjoyed by 100s of birders.

Little Crake / Klein Waterhoen
Porzana parva 36,14,1
10 September to 1 October, Lepelaarplassen, Almere, Flevoland, juvenile, photographed, videoed (K Buitenkamp, R van der Meer et al; Dutch Birding 33: 342, plate 440, 420, plate 559, 2011).

Little Bustard / Kleine Trap
Tetrax tetrax 32,10,1
3 September, Otterlose Zand, NP De Hoge Veluwe, Ede, Gelderland, third calendar-year male, photographed (R Vermoolen et al; Dutch Birding 33: 340, plate 433, 2011).
The first since 2000 and, as a consequence, attracting many birders. Most records are from winter months and there are only three previous September records, from more than a century ago, in 1865 and 1895 (two).

Eurasian Stone-curlew / Griel
Burhinus oedicnemus -,60,-
1995 10 May, Wijk aan Zee, Beverwijk, Noord-Holland, 16th calendar-year, found dead, wearing metal ring, photographed, corpse retained by finder (via G O Keijl).
1977 14 September, Vogelshoek, Gassel, Grave, Noord-Brabant (G van Aalst).
The bird found dead at Wijk aan Zee had been ringed as pullus in Norfolk, England, on 1 June 1980 (Appleton et al 1997). It was listed in van den Berg & Bosman (1999, 2001) with the annotation that it was not yet accepted by the CDNA.

Cream-colored Courser / Renvogel
Cursorius cursor 3,1,0
1844 c 18 October, 's-Graveland, Wijdemeren, Noord-Holland, first calendar-year, shot, photographed, skin in collection of NCB Naturalis Leiden (via R J Vlek).
The record was reviewed but not accepted because it was unclear in which year the bird had been collected (van IJzendoorn et al 1996). However, it is back on the Dutch list thanks to the efforts of Ruud Vlek (in litt), who recently traced a short note in a newspaper, Dagblad van 's-Gravenhage of 21 October 1844, with a photograph of the fresh corpse. Other records of this species were in November 1909, October 1933 and October 1986.

Greater Sand Plover / Woestijnplevier
Charadrius leschenaultii 1,11,2
27 April, Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, female, photographed (B van den Broek et al; Dutch Birding 33: 215, plate 256, 2011); 28 April to 1 May, Batenburg, Wijchen, Gelderland, adult female, photographed (A Bos, C van der Wardt et al; Birding World 24: 149, 2011, Dutch Birding 33: 215, plate 257, 272, plate 343, 2011); Duinen bij Falga and Mariëndal, Den Helder, Noord-Holland, second calendar-year female, photographed (H Bouma, C van Vliet et al: Dutch Birding 33: 272, plate 344, 2011).
By comparing photographs, it was concluded that the birds at Hoek van Holland and Den Helder refer to the same individual. This was the second year (after 2006) in which two birds were found. Besides, these were the second and third record during spring migration, after one at Harlingen, Friesland, on 30 April 2005; all other records were between 23 June and 4 September. Totals include Anatolian Sand Plover C l columbinus.

Caspian Plover / Kaspische Plevier
Charadrius asiaticus 0,1,1
26-28 April, De Nederlanden, Texel, Noord-Holland, adult summer male, photographed, videoed (C Bussen et al; Ebels & de Jong, 2011; Birding World 24: 148, 2011, 25: 32, 2012, Dutch Birding 33: 197, plate 227, 198, plate 228-230, 2011).
The first record was a first-winter at Den Hoorn, Texel, on 17-20 October 2009. Considering the species' rarity in north-western Europe and the proximity of the 2009 and 2011 localities, one may wonder whether the records in 2009 and 2011 may refer to the same individual. The bird was found by a visiting birder from Germany.

The assessment of records of this often elusive species is simplified by photographs, even if these are out of focus.

Long-billed Dowitcher / Grote Grijze Snip
Limnodromus scolopaceus 0,28,4
3 May, Zaans Rietveld, Alphen aan den Rijn, Zuid-Holland, adult summer (P de Knijff); 8 and 11-20 May, Zuidpolder van Delfgauw, Pijnacker-Nootdorp, Zuid-Holland, adult summer, photographed (P Planken, T J C Luijendijk et al); 2-9 October, Vierhuizen, De Marne, Groningen, juvenile, photographed (M Olthoff et al); 19 October, De Blikken, Sluis, Zeeland, and 22 October to 7 November, Baarzandsche Kreek, Sluis, Zeeland, first-winter, photographed (P Dhaluin, C Martens, M Martens et al).

Limnodromus scolopaceus/griseus 1,5,1
15-22 May, De Blikken, Sluis, Zeeland, adult summer (M Capello, P Dhaluin et al).
2010 13 June, Sophiapolder, Sluis, Zeeland, adult summer, photographed (M Klootwijk, P Dhaluin); 28 August, Jaap Deensgat, Lauwersmeer, De Marne, Groningen, adult, photographed (A Boven).
Both records were reported as Long-billed Dowitcher L scolopaceus and reviewed on the basis of a few distant photographs without further information. The CDNA, therefore, could not exclude Short-billed Dowitcher L griseus and welcomes more documentation on these records to clinch the identification.

Slender-billed Curlew / Dunbekwulp
Numenius tenuirostris 9,0,0
1888 5 December, Zierikzee, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, collected, skin at Missiemuseum Steijl (W Spoor; Jansen 2012; Dutch Birding 34: 315, plate 426, 2012).
The record had been removed form the Dutch list in the 1990s because the date and place where it had been shot were unknown (van IJzendoorn et al 1996). Research by Justin Jansen revealed that it was shot by Willem Spoor and kept in the van Harten collection (Jansen 2012). A retraced notebook of van Harten gave sufficient information about date and place to re-install the record as the second for the Dutch list.

Terek Sandpiper / Terekruiter
Xenus cinereus 1,44,3
12 May, Kelsdonk, Etten-Leur, Noord-Brabant, two (J Frijters); 12-17 June, Oudega, Wymbritseradiel (Wijmbritseradeel), Friesland, photographed (K Eschbach, H ter Haar et al).
The May record concerns the second of two birds together (the first was in July 2003).

Spotted Sandpiper / Amerikaanse Oeverloper
Actitis macularius 1,1,1
30-31 July, Hogerwaardpolder, Rilland, Reimerswaal, Zeeland, and Bergen op Zoom, Noord-Brabant, adult summer, photographed, videoed (J Simons, M Krijnen et al; Krijnen et al 2011; Dutch Birding 33: 313, plate 393-394, 314, plate 395-396, 2011).
This was only the third record and the first twitchable one, after an adult summer collected in July 1976 and a juvenile seen but not photographed in August 1980. Remarkably, another adult was observed a few days later at Antwerpen, c 40 km to the south, constituting the third record for Belgium. The small number of records in the Low Countries is remarkable compared with the high numbers in Britain.

Greater Yellowlegs / Grote Geelpootruiter
Tringa melanoleuca 0,4,0
17 October 2010 to 7 May 2012, several sites on Noord-Beveland, Noord-Beveland, Zeeland, second calendar-year, photographed, sound-recorded, videoed (Birding World 24: 10, 234, 2011, Dutch Birding 33: 144, plate 153, 273, plate 345, 364, plate 474, 2011).
The well-known bird discovered in October 2010 remained at several sites on Noord-Beveland through 2011; it may well be Europe's longest-staying individual of this species.

Lesser Yellowlegs / Kleine Geelpootruiter
Tringa flavipes 2,22,1
30 April, Wevers Inlaag, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, photographed (N van Houtum, S Rijnbeek).

1989 21-22 June, Strabrechtse Heide, Heeze-Leende, Noord-Brabant (J E Kikkert).
The summer 1992 record concerns a date extension of one of the three birds present here in June-August (van den Berg & Bosman 1999, 2001, Ovaa et al 2010, 2011). The species is no longer considered since 1 January 1993 but the CDNA still welcomes reports from before this date.

Wilson's Phalarope / Grote Franjepoot
Phalaropus tricolor 6,16,1
24 and 28-29 August, Wagejot, Nieuw Buitenheim and Ottersaat, Texel, Noord-Holland, first-winter, photographed, videoed (B Spaans, A Wassink, J van den Berg et al; Dutch Birding 33: 348, plate 449, 350, plate 454, 2011).

All records are considered to refer to the same individual which, after its inland stay in April, started to wander along the North Sea coast of Zuid-Holland. Several other observations from sea-watching points have not (yet) been submitted and the CDNA welcomes them to get a full picture of the bird's wanderings. There has been one previous summer record of an adult staying on Vlieland from 6 June to 15 July 1958 (when it was found dead).

Baltic Gull / Baltische Mantelmeeuw
Larus fuscus fuscus 0,13,1
10 June, Centraal Station, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, second calendar-year, wearing colour-ring, photographed (W van der Waal).
2010 13 October, Westkapelle, Veere, Zeeland, fifth calendar-year, wearing colourring, photographed (S Lilipaly); 19 November, Nederweert, Nederweert, Limburg, first calendar-year, wearing colourring, photographed (J Nagtegaal).
2009 1 October, Westkapelle, Veere, Zeeland, fifth calendar-year, wearing colour-ring, photographed (I Meulmeester).
The only individual accepted so far for 2011 had been ringed as pullus (yellow C51N on right leg) near Uusikaarlepyy, Finland, on 17 July 2010. The bird seen near Westkapelle on 1 October 2009 had been colourringed (black J030 on left leg) as pullus on E Lislandholmen, Nordhorsvær, Sømna, Nordland, Norway, on 23 June 2005. The bird at Westkapelle in 2010 had also been ringed as pullus (black J663) in a colony at H Maritholman Sørøst, Nordland, Norway, on 26 July 2006. For information on two other individuals at Westkapelle in September-October 2009-10, see Ovaa et al (2011). The bird photographed near Nederweert in 2010, the first for the inland Limburg province, had been ringed (yellow C54A on right leg) as pullus at Hamina, Finland, c 20 km from the Russian border, on 1 July 2010. There are two other reports of colourringed Baltic Gulls in 2011 of which the details have not (yet) been submitted. The CDNA has decided to follow the recommendations by Altenburg et al (2011) enabling the identification of some well-documented but unringed second calendar-year birds.

Kumlien's Gull / Kumliens Meeuw
Larus glaucoides kumlieni 0,1,1
3 April, Spaarbekken De Gijster, Brabantse Biesbosch, Drimmelen, Noord-Brabant, adult summer, photographed (T O V Muusse, M J M Muusse, B Verhoeven et al; Muusse 2011; Dutch Birding 33: 193, plate 223-224, 194, plate 225-226, 2011).
The second record after a second-winter bird on Terschelling, Friesland, on 30 January 2005. In the winter of 2011/12, a large influx of Iceland Gulls L glaucoides occurred in the Netherlands and western Europe, including several dark immatures. The discussion on the subspecific identity of these birds increased the knowledge and resulted in new identification criteria. The Terschelling record, therefore, will be reviewed based on these criteria.

Roseate Tern / Dougalls Stern
Sterna dougallii 3,30,1
18-20 June, Westkapelle, Veere, Zeeland, adult summer, photographed (H Reijhoudt, P A Wolf et al).
The documentation and photographs concerned just one individual although two birds were reported. The CDNA would appreciate receiving details of the alleged second individual.

Thick-billed Murre / Kortbekzeekoet
Uria lomvia 5,3,0
2005 23 October, Noordzeestrand, Schiermonnikoog, Friesland, photographed (K Hendriks, S Rijnbeek, B Wielstra et al; van Bemmelen et al 2005; Dutch Birding 27: 448, plate 560, 2005).
The bird was seen during a passage of record numbers of Little Auks Alle alle. Although it was photographed, it took some time before the CDNA was convinced about the bird's identity (it was first rejected and then accepted after review, cf van der Vliet et al 2007). A paper documenting this record for Dutch Birding will deal with the identification of Thick-billed Murre and confusion species. It was the eighth record but only the second of a bird seen alive.

Black Guillemot / Zwarte Zeekoet
Cepphus grylle 31,63,-
2005 14 November, Katwijk aan Zee, Katwijk, Zuid-Holland (B van der Burg).

With four records (all involving juveniles), 2011 was the best year ever. In 1982, 1995 and 2010 two birds were found.

Pale Barn Owl / Witte Kerkuil
Tyto alba alba 3,6,0
1987 12 June, Sellingen, Vlagtwedde, Groningen, photographed (N de Vries).
2009 9 November, Groene Glop, Schiermonnikoog, Friesland, ringed, photographed (H Bouwmeester, H Huiskamp).
The bird from 1987 was reportedly paired with a Dark Barn Owl T a guttata in this year, as well as in 1988 and 1989; no details about the offspring have been submitted and, because further documentation is lacking, the bird has only been accepted for the date when the photograph was taken.

Snowy Owl / Sneeuwuil
Bubo scandiacus 8,9,0
1992 24 June, Meijendel, Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland, photographed (H van der Meer).
1992 already was the best year for this species and, with the acceptance of this individual, the total number becomes five. The other four were all females between 8 March and 21 April 1992. In all other record years, only one was seen, sometimes at various sites.

Eurasian Pygmy Owl / Dwerguil

Up to two birds at Zuidland, Zuid-Holland, on 8-10 July (Dutch Birding 33: 262, plate 324, 355, plate 464, 2011) are still in circulation, to establish if one or two birds were involved.

Blue-cheeked Bee-eater / Groene Bijeneter
Merops persicus 0,3,1
22 July, Slikken van Flakkee, Dirksland, Zuid-Holland, photographed (H Gazan et al; Dutch Birding 33: 352, plate 458, 2011).

Most birds are found in spring or early summer (30 in May-July). There were five previous October records and there was one in November (in 1981). This year's bird stayed around a mustard field, hunting insects attracted by the flowering plants.

* Long-tailed Shrike / Langstaartklauwier
Lanius schach 0,0,1
31 October, Oude Vuilnisbelt, Den Helder, Noord-Holland, first-year, photographed (J van Dillen-Staal et al; van Dillen-Staal & Ebels 2011, 2012; Birding World 24: 431, 2011, 25: 37, 2012, Dutch Birding 33: 416, plate 556, 429, plate 583-584, 2011, 34: 309, plate 419-420, 2012).
The bird stayed for a full day and it was seen by more than 300 birders. It most probably belonged to the western and highly migratory subspecies L s erythronotus. There were three previous European records, in Sweden (1999), Scotland (2000) and Denmark (2007).

Systematic list of rejected reports
This list contains all records not accepted by the CDNA. Records marked with @ were rejected by all committee members in the first or second voting. Most records were rejected because the identification was not fully established (often due to lack of documentation) or when the bird showed signs of captivity, such as dubious rings, excessive wear and/or aberrant behaviour. Species for which the CDNA unanimously decided that all records up to and including 2011 refer to birds of captive origin are indicated with an asterisk (*). This included records of birds of which all ancestors are assumed to be of captive origin (introduced species of British category C).
